What Are Flow Meter Sensors and Elements?
A flow meter has two main parts. The body or flow tube contains the process fluid. The sensor element creates the raw signal. In an electromagnetic flow meter, the sensor elements include electrodes, liners, and excitation coils. In a vortex meter, the sensor element is typically a piezoelectric crystal behind a bluff body. In a thermal mass meter, the elements are PT100 RTD sensors. In a Coriolis meter, the elements are drive coils, pickoff coils, and a temperature sensor.
These parts are called wet parts or dry parts. Wet parts contact the process fluid. Dry parts sit behind the seal or inside the transmitter housing. When you order a replacement part, you need to know which category failed.
Common Machinery Applications
Factory machinery often has built-in flow meters for cooling water, fuel, hydraulic oil, steam, or dosing chemicals. A failed sensor on a compressor cooling loop can stop the whole machine. Sensor Types We Replace
Electromagnetic flow meter sensors: We supply electrodes made from 316L stainless steel, Hastelloy C, titanium, tantalum, and platinum. We also supply liners such as PTFE, hard rubber, and PFA. Typical line sizes are DN15 to DN300. Signals are usually 4-20 mA HART or pulse. The process fluid should have a minimum conductivity, usually 5 µS/cm for most inline electromagnetic meters. For a DN50 electromagnetic water meter, a typical replacement part is the SI-EMF DN50 electrode set with 316L electrodes and a PTFE liner.
Vortex flow meter sensors: The replacement element is often a piezoelectric sensor assembly. It works for steam, compressed air, and gas. Temperature range can go from -40 to 250 °C.
